Some teeth are just bad eggs. Some teeth are fundamentally good teeth but have just fallen on hard times. Sometimes it is peer pressure which turns them crooked. When a tooth turns to a life of crime it can be because of many socioeconomic reasons and the root (yes root) of the problem can be hard to find. The important thing is we try and rehabilitate the teeth and not just punish them, by locking them up in braces.

O.k slightly more helpful answer is that crooked teeth can be caused by having a weak jaw which can be due to lack of nutrients or eating soft foods all the time and sometimes because the upper teeth put pressure on the lower teeth and move them about.

Also it can be due to genetics- like mine. Every one on my dad’s side of the family have crooked teeth. I had braces through high school. The annoying thing is that there are little tendons that connect to the teeth to hold them in place, and the tendons always want to pull the teeth back to their original place. So you have to wear a retainer once in a while to remind your teeth who’s boss!
