Thank you from your winner Paul!

Thanks to all the students for making this such a great event! Also, thanks to the teachers for getting your students involved- and thanks for voting for me!! Also a shout out to ModEmily for trying to control those frenzied chats (but great fun!)- Talk about multi-tasking… Before the event started I was a bit nervous, thinking I wouldn’t be able to answer loads of the questions, and it would be really hard. But, I ended up having so much fun that I didn’t worry about getting things wrong- it turns out that “I don’t know” is a perfectly valid answer. This is particularly applicable for me at the moment, since I am going to have my PhD defense (viva) in 2 weeks (eep!). And when I didn’t know an answer, it was actually great because all of the scientists in my zone were REALLY knowledgeable… So, thanks to the … Continue reading

I’m a Scientist – you’ve decided to let ARLENE go

We’ve counted, checked and rechecked the votes and now it’s game over for… ARLENE This leaves just “driven, inspired, scattered.” Paul and “Floating through Space” David to fight it out for the €500 prize tomorrow. What would they both do with the money, you ask? Paul says “If I win this contest, I will use the money to hire an undergraduate student (part-time) and purchase materials to kick-off a project I have been thinking about for a long time- SolarSurfer.org, a story-driven, astronomy education website, aimed at primary and secondary students.” and David says “I want to build a computer game in a table top which you can play by moving your chair around. No meal will ever be boring again! It would be a interactive piece for Dublin mini maker Faire ( http://www.makerfairedublin.com), which I help organise. It would use the tilt of the chairs people are sitting on … Continue reading

I’m a Scientist – 1st out is… EUGENE!

It’s been a fantastic event so far and the scientists have worked hard, answering hundreds of questions between them. But on Friday there can only be one winner in each zone, so some of them have to go. We are sorry to have to do this to you, but the first scientist to be evicted is… EUGENE Thanks so much for all you’ve done. We hope you’ve enjoyed taking part. There will be evictions every day for the rest of the week, with the winner announced on Friday. Keep voting students, for your favourite scientist to win! Who will walk off with the prize? YOU decide!
